The Science of Photocatalytic Protection

When ultraviolet light interacts with a titanium dioxide catalyst, it produces highly reactive oxidising molecules such as hydroxyl radicals. These molecules are powerful enough to break down bacteria, viruses, mould spores, and volatile organic compounds, yet they exist in concentrations that are far below occupational exposure thresholds. The result is effective, continuous sanitation that is safe for people and pets in occupied spaces.

In addition to treating the air, illuminare applies a persistent photocatalytic surface coating to high-touch areas. This transparent layer provides long-lasting antimicrobial protection, reducing microbial build-up for three to six months between routine cleans. illuminare contains no phthalates, perchloroethylene (Perc), triclosan, or quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats), substances often found in disinfectants that can irritate or leave behind harmful residues. It is also free from 2-butoxyethanol, ammonia, chlorine bleach, sodium hydroxide, formaldehyde, and 1,4-dioxane, avoiding the hazards of corrosive agents and strong solvents.

For those who are sensitive to additives, illuminare provides peace of mind by excluding artificial fragrances, diethanolamine (DEA), triethanolamine (TEA), and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), all of which have been linked to long-term health concerns. It also contains no cellosolve or related solvents, ensuring that protection remains as gentle as it is effective.

Independent Validation

The effectiveness of illuminare has been independently verified in a ten-week study conducted at the University of Surrey’s Veterinary Pathology Centre. Four comparable classrooms were monitored: one left untreated as a control, one fitted with air treatment only, one treated with the surface coating only, and one equipped with both technologies. All rooms continued to receive standard daily cleaning.

Laboratory analysis of surface swabs at baseline confirmed the presence of live colonies of Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. After treatment, rooms with illuminare technology recorded bacterial counts below one colony-forming unit per square centimetre, with no viable colonies detected in cultures. The untreated control room, by contrast, showed no meaningful reduction.

Air sampling produced equally compelling results. Classrooms using the combined air and surface treatments recorded a significant reduction in airborne microbial particles in the size range that typically carries bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Researchers highlighted the synergistic effect of combining the two technologies, noting that reduced airborne contamination prevented surface re-seeding, while protected surfaces in turn supported better air quality.
